It's not awful. It's not exciting. None of the available OC's with experience were going to come here with Mariota basically being a lame duck QB. It also keeps a lot of continuity on the offense so MM8 doesn't have to start from scratch again - that's good for all of the Mariota apologists who were going to point to 4 OC's in 5 years (that's still technically true, but make no mistake, this was a hire to keep continuity). Every good coordinator has had to pay their dues as quality control or position coaches. McVay was even a TE coach himself. Not saying he's McVay but maybe there's more to Arthur Smith than we really know. I'm going to withhold judgement until I see him in action, because there wasn't really anyone out there anyway that would have excited me.
