I think theres a radical line that some people have already hit because of having to watch the downfall of VY, Locker & then Mett that they're all blind to Mariota's immediate flaws. Im all for Mariota and theres a lot of people who are as well, but i think a lot of us care more about the team, so we're quick to defend him when the team as a whole has much more problems. But i certainly don't think Mariota's anywhere near finishing his development; we knew he was a project when we drafted him so im willing to continue to be patient with him for a maximum of 2 more years.

Do I think none of those ints are his fault? Not at all. He had some straight up boneheaded ints all year.

But I can also look past one effed up year and not throw the baby out with the bath water.

Yes we had the same coaching staff, but we were not calling games the same way. We actually had rollouts and misdirections in 2016. Last year, they were used extremely sporadically.

In 2016 we actually called passing plays in the red zone, and ones designed to be thrown by the actual QB. And even better yet, they weren’t all on 3rd down after we got stuffed 2 plays in a row.

So keep telling yourself your just “spouting the truth” or being a realist, and the rest of us will just know the truth that your a hater.

Keep in mind there is a big difference in avg cost per year and what the actual cap hit is every year. Most contracts are backloaded so while you might have an avg cap hit of 20mil/year, it might only be 10mil hit in year one but a 30mil hit in year 7. Lot of ways to do this. Could front load them, keep them relatively balanced or back load them. obviously backloading takes off the most risk as a player could have a serious injury or performance could fall off as they get older. Can also simply renegotiate an extension.

I'm not worried about Mariota's contract. If he flourishes under LaFleur...we won't mind making him the highest paid QB for a short while if he's a top 3 QB and has us competing for a title.

 

I was just talking per season average. They'll work it out where they can try to keep the cap hits doable.

Mariota earning a 30m/year average contract is a good problem to have. Good QBs don't grow on trees. I think he will bounce back and his contract won't be much of a concern in a few years.

 

So if you're a DC, would you keep calling the same plays with the same formations and expect no one will adjust to you from year 1 to year 2? You arguing the same coaching staff is bad as they became very predictable. In 2016, we threw a lot of big plays and 3rd downs to DeMarco. We didn't have him this year as an 'exotic' branch of the offense. Davis being hurt before and during the season obviously was a big problem too. How come Matthews didn't have better stats? He was with Mariota last year and did MUCH better? Why the fall off?

The one thing that makes it hard to believe anything you say is unbiased is when you same things that are demonstrably untrue. And saying things like Mariota threw softballs right to the DB every single time is hate speech as it is demonstrably untrue. Yes, he made a few boneheaded INT's where he did throw it right to a defender, but while one is too many, he didn't throw a lot of those and certainly not all of them. And I can think of at least 1 INT that was one Davis not running his route correctly. So this craziness of Mariota threw it to our opponents every single time is hate speech my friend and beneath you if you want people to take what you say seriously.

 

Several Mariota supporters including myself have pointed out his down season and the numerous things that have gone into it including Mariota's own part in it. If you want to speak honestly, then speak the truth and not things like...he threw a softball to the defensive player for every single INT. Simply NOT TRUE!!!

Which is fine, but you also can't argue with my criticisms of Mariota's play.

The best you can do is say "but with different coaching".... it was the same coaching he had in 2016, fellas. He changed. Staff was the same.
