Fair enough; but wretched film or not it at least told the actual story (or attempted to) which was less of a horror story and more of a science fiction tale. Shelley was only 18 when she started writing it, and it's primarily her age and her time frame that makes it "horror". The Boris Karloff et al versions bear no resemblance whatsoever to the story.

Agreed. The intro was typically Hollywooded in the Vlad backstory, but other than than was pretty faithful to the text. Bless Keanu's heart for writing ginormous paychecks to the guys who made him famous in The Matrix but no, he shouldn't have been cast in this film.

There were other attempts at sticking closer to the novel over the years - none of which really translated well. Shelley's goals obviously differed vastly from the Universal and Hammer adaptations and I'm glad they didn't stick to the novel any more than they did. I cover this in the blog - it is the deviations from Shelley that are possibly the greatest highlights of the early Universal series (Pretorius, Ygor, Wolf von Frankenstein etc.)
Hammer abandons it outright sans a few bits of popular imagery solely in the first film.
