That article actually has it in context, but an article on the Tennessean uses that quote a bit out of context, and that's exactly what it looks like i.e. he feels he is being benched for being the wrong color. After reading this article from ESPN and knowing he's not the sharpest tool in the shed anyway, I think he just heard the word "adversity", and thought he needed to say something about being black.

I think that's reading a bit too much into it.

The reporter was there promptly trying to make it into a headline, but Vince "corrected" his choice of words just fine.
