They turned it up against Georgetown. The Tatum kid took over the game.
They lucked out vs GeorgeTown. I was really excited about seeing this Tennessee team play (as Ive said in many posts), but they disappointed me today. Zero defense, tons of missed layups, Maze isn't anything special when he isn't playing pick-up ball, etc.
JP Prince and Tatum won the game for them, but Tatum was just lucky as all hell. That banked in 3 with the worst form ever showed that much. Just one of those games. But it reminded me of what the commentator said earlier in the game - "Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good".
Negadu is looking better, so that's a plus. But without Tatum's streak changing the momentum, GT would've walked away with this one. I was scared about Memphis playing UT before now, but I think they can blow by these "defenders" with ease and just use their athleticism.
But, a win is a win. All good teams get the lucky bounces and streaks from guys that normally wouldn't score.
I could see them getting blown out next game, and where I had them as a sure final 4 team, I can't see them making the elite 8 now. Last year's team was better.
What? As you said, a lot of missed layups, If anything Georgetown was lucky to stick around as long as they did. We took a bunch of 6 or 7 point leads, then relapsed and all of the sudden it was GT up 3 or a tie game. Just a streaky day on the court, but clearly the better team won.
I'll admit yesterday was an off day, but defense will never be our specialty with Bruce Pearl at the helm. Organized Chaos, run and gun, call it what you want, we aren't a shut down team, we put up digits and at the end of the day [usually] we have more points then the other team. 90 on GT, isn't exactly a walk in the park.
Bobby Maze is pretty dang good in my book. Hes everything you could ask for in a point guard and then some. 14 points 9 assists, just another day in the office for B-Maze.
These are big IF's you bring up...I mean, your acting like Tatum isn't a good player. Every game someone else steps up and gets it done for us, So yeah, if Tatum doesn't hit those big shots, we likely lose, who cares? He hit the shots. You can't penalize a team for not winning the way you would of liked?
Everyone on the Volunteers with the exception of Pearl is capable of scoring 15-20 points a night, and yes, were just that good.
After one game, which they won, by 12 against #16 Georgetown, your already writing them off? Thats a bit harsh.
Gonzaga won't be able to keep up with UT. Tennessee 84 Zaga 67
Georgetown had the game won til Tatum got on his luck streak. Did they not? At that point, Tatum could bounce the ball off a popcorn vendor and it'd go in.
And if the Vols play like they did vs GT against Zaga, they'll lose. For sure.
Hoffa just high fived the wrong guy.
I really like this years Vols team but they got to quit missing easy layups and commiting stupid turnovers. They do that they will outscore everyone they play. Zags are a tough team. They were in it until mid way in the second half, they the turnovers killed them.
This team will be very good later in the season. Right now they are very young and haven't played together much at all. I expected a loss against the Zags, but they played well, but shots weren't falling.
Gonzaga is my sleeper for the title this year. They're loaded. Auburn basketball I think is 4-2 and play at Xavier Wednesday.
Go Duke, my other basketball team!
Not relevant to UT, but how about those Hilltoppers?
You know, I was going to give them the "chemistry" excuse, but they played in a summer league every day for quite a while. They should have more chemistry than most teams right now considering a shorter offseason.
I still expect them to be very solid, just not worth the hype I gave them in the preseason.
