The board is full of blatantly obvious fantasy posts about how all we need to succeed is to draft the next Peyton Manning or Tom Brady and we will be fine. well no kidding. So where do you find them?

We have posters starting threads as if we never tried to draft a franchise QB before. As if using a first rd pick on a QB was anathema to the franchise. Fact is we have with very mixed results. We used a 3rd pick on a head case and an 8th pick on a guy who is always hurt. Now back to the well again.

There are other options. Some more radical or more expensive than others. It could be a matter of bringing in one more guy to compete for a starting or #2 job. McCown or Schaub would fit that example. It could be a franchise QB like a Cutler or a Romo.

The objective is to get better at that position. There are other options.

The age is what they will be when the season starts in September.

    1. God no
    2. We already have a vet that turns over the ball
    3. Would consider cheap (Don't see him as that great of a quarterback but is better than Fitz even with his bad year this year)
    4. Thinking about retiring
    5. Couldn't beat out a 3rd round pick or a undrafted quarterback
    6. No thank you

Didn't Romo sign a huge extension in the past off-season?

Yes. He will be a Cowboy next year barring a blockbuster trade (and that won't happen). Not worth including on a list of "options."

Don't fool yourself about McCown... He's in a favorable situation with Trestman being a very QB-friendly coach. McCown would suck anywhere else.

Cutler is the only one who's close to being a realistic option... and he's going to be too expensive. I, unlike some, would like him to join our team because he's better than anything we've had since 2003, but the price tag is too high.

So that shows folks that the vet QB option isn't a great option. I think the best thing to do is to keep Locker and Fitz and draft a QB. If we feel the value is their in the 1st then I have no problem taking a guy that early. Let him battle it out with the other guys for the starting spot. If the value isn't their in the 1st then grab a guy in the 2nd,3rd, or 4th rnds. If Locker proves he can stay healthy and earns an extension then great we have a cheap backup for several years in the guy we just drafted. If Locker bombs then you hope the guy you drafted early can be the man.

I just think it is very rare for a true franchise QB to hit the open market. If you want Brady or Manning you need to draft QBs till you finally hit on one.

Honestly, I think Schaub may not be a bad pick up overall. Have him duke it out with Locker and meanwhile, draft your #1 QB for the future. That would significantly improve this team and Schaub would be cheaper than Cutler...Just a thought though
