    Snow Leopard is nice
there's quite a few things is does over Leopard
for one, t's snappier, fewer spinny rainbows
an unexpected function was with my printer , which now has utilities and scanner app built into the OS which is much better than the crapware that Brother included for it

Maybe it's time to move up from Tiger.

I formatted a brand new 320gb HDD in a dock and installed SnL onto it using the upgrade disc then swapped it out with the stock 120gb in my MB. worked perfect. did the same thing with the Mrs.

however, doing a clean install will not provide you with any of the iLife apps , they are found on the software restore disc (usually disc 2) that came with your Mac

look, just get the $25 Upgrade disc and see if it works
if it dont, take it back
    but it should

I suggest going ahead and getting a new HDD, and a dock from NewEgg or OWC. I bought a 320gb/7200rpm with a bus-powered enclosure (it's about the size of a deck of cards) for like $80 from OWC

i used the same disc on 4 different HDD's so far
2 drives hade Leopard on them. the other 2 were blank and formatted OSX-Extended Journaled

so the myth that a base OS already needs to be present on the HDD is a myth

You can't return opened software discs, but it shouldn't be a problem.

The upgrade (thankfully) doesn't include all the extra apps... it's just the OS, which is fine. however, I ran software update soon afterwards, and there were 973Mb of updates to dl and install, which appears to me to include all version 10.5->10.6 updates as well as v. 10.6.2.

The SnL 'upgrade' disc is the entire OS.

Ah, that's good news.. Love Snow Leopard on my new MBP with the pinch pad and all that. I got the notebook to use Pro Tools on the go but of course Pro Tools qualifies a different version for Snow Leapard which mean I have to upgrade my Tiger desktop to SL, Pro-Tools to 8, Guitar Rig to 4.0, Sampletank to whatever and so on.. It will $500 by the time I'm done..
