I work in the pet industry and you'd shocked at how many people call me either after their pet just died or when it's about to die. When I tell them to get to a vet they say the same thing you just did.
My only response is that I'm sorry they cared more about saving a buck than saving their pet.
Vets charge a minute fraction of what most human doctors charge..

Oh don't get me wrong, I take them to the vet, but I prefer to keep them out as much as possible. Avoiding things such as unpredictable wild animals is one of them.
