Another interesting perspective on this situation:

By Weber signing the offer sheet, he basically gives up his UFA status, meaning he may have just agreed to play for Nashville for the rest of his career. Knowing how close these two GM's are, this could be a move by Philly to help Poile sign Weber long-term.

From what I have heard, Poile is matching, and won't even listen to anyone trying to tell him otherwise. Weber will be in a Preds uniform for the rest of his career.

I think you're a bit nieve to think that losing Suter and Weber wouldn't hurt because you have "great prospects"

Generally it takes prospects (and that's what they are) a good chunk of years to even come close to the level of Suter/Weber, who i consider top 10 D in the NHL.

Not withstanding i believe cap wise Nashville is about 13M under the cap floor! So they need to spend money sooner or later don't they?

I know if the Rangers were to lose our top two D-men our team would be really set back, mainly because of the style of hockey we play.

I still think Nashville is going to match the offer sheet.

Let's just assume Weber stays, which I think he will. The only player we've lost is Suter. Sure, its a big loss on D, but it's not going to instantly sink this team.

Fully agree losing one of the two is not the end of the world at all.

Losing both on the other hand i think would be. So i agree. with you there

Well, things just took a big turn. Weber said he doesn't want to play in Nashville.

    Ouch.

Preds have amazing fans. I feel really bad for them. Doesn't want to play in Nashville why?

    ;)

    Love it.

BTW it wouldn't be four picks in the same draft. It would be our first round pick in four consecutive years..which would be crap picks seeing as we would make a deep run in the playoffs.

I highly doubt they match it. I don't think they have the money to; we (Philly) frontloaded the contract and have a huge signing bonus. It looks more like an NFL contrac than a NHL one. I think the signing bonus is around 27m. Either way it's going to be hard for the Preds to match it.

That being said I could see a follow up trade. Where the Preds would trade some of the compensation picks back to us for players (defensemen most likely, as you would need them and we have a surplus of them). Plus you may turn around and send an OS to our RFA.

Either way, it's a win, win situation for Philly as we either get Weber or our divion rivals don't. Our GM is friends with Poile so I think there is something going on behind the scene (trade I spoke of above).
