Bears assigned the franchise tag to WR Alshon Jeffery.

NFL Network's Rand Getlin reports there is "still distance to cover" in the Bears' long-term negotiations with Jeffery, but that is clearly the goal of the team. Jeffery's one-year tag is worth $14.599 million. Jeffery, 26, has developed into arguably the NFL's most dominant pass catcher in the contested game and Jay Cutler's most trusted target since Brandon Marshall's departure. The Bears have a chance to field one of the league's premier wide receiver corps if Jeffery, 2015 first-round pick Kevin White, slot man Eddie Royal, and promising reserve Marquess Wilson can get and stay healthy.

    Richie Incognito - G - Bills
Pro Football Talk reports the Bills are 'frustrated' impending free agent LG Richie Incognito will not accept a cut-rate deal.

The Bills gave Incognito a chance last season, and he repaid them with an outstanding season. Now headed to free agency, the Bills apparently believe Incognito should give them a hometown discount. Likely signing his last big contract at age 32, Incognito understandably disagrees. It seemed like a foregone conclusion Incognito would return to Buffalo, but it now appears there is a real chance he hits the open market.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports free agent CB Brice McCain will visit the Titans Tuesday.

Cut by the Dolphins in February, McCain has already visited the Bucs and has reportedly received interest from the Steelers. It appears likely he finds a new home before free agency begins.

Dolphins assigned the transition tag to DE Olivier Vernon.

Vernon is free to negotiate with other teams, but the Dolphins will have the right to match any offer. They will not receive any compensation if they choose not to match. It is an interesting decision after the Dolphins lost Charles Clay on the transition tag last offseason. Vernon will earn $12.734 million if he plays out the season under the tag, but he is almost certain to land a long-term deal in free agency. Whether that deal will be with the Dolphins or another team remains an open question. Vernon should receive at least $12 million annually on his next deal.

Chiefs assigned the franchise tag to S Eric Berry.

The no-brainer move locks Berry in at $10.806 million, and gives the sides over four months to reach a long-term agreement. With his 2014 wiped out by a cancer diagnosis, Berry returned with a vengeance last season, playing all 16 games en route to first-team All Pro status. Berry was also an All Pro in 2013. One of the league's best players, Berry turned 27 in December.

    GOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGO!

Browns C Alex Mack exercised his opt-out clause, voiding the final three years of his contract, and is now a free agent.

As expected. Mack waited until the franchise-tag deadline passed and is now back on the market after signing a five-year, $42 million offer sheet with the Jaguars in April 2014 only to see the Browns match it. Look for the Jaguars to be back in on Mack, who's still just 30 years old. Returning to the Browns isn't out of the picture, but Mack is now one of the top free agents available.

Titans signed CB Brice McCain, formerly of the Dolphins, to a two-year, $4.4 million contract.

McCain, 29, was released by the Dolphins just over two weeks ago, allowing him to get a jump on the rest of the free-agent class and find a home before the new league year opens March 9. At 5'9/190, McCain will compete for slot-corner duties in Tennessee after flaming out across 11 starts for Miami.
