I use a HR monitor and have done testing and found that yes the "basic" best guess that most of these apps have can be well off. My bike computer allows me to plug in my height/weight/max HR, and after I do a 20 minute MAX test (basically ride all out for 20 minutes, i.e. as fast as you can go) it then estimates your caloric burn rate for any HR level. For me at a threshold level which would be a HR of between 145-159 I burn about 900 calories per hour. It goes down to about 650 or so when I lower my HR level to between 120-144, however at that level you do burn more fat calories as a percentage. Long story a little shorter, to burn fat workout for a longer period of time....to increase your fitness level you...get stronger or, in my case faster you have to workout at the threshold level to increase your power.

 

I am 55 and yes a lot of it comes down to what you eat....and when. My stats...6 ft....155lbs. 3 percent body fat....fast as hell on a bike. LOL
