Give the guy the vet minimum or whatever he wants as long as it's reasonable. I'm not sure why anyone hasn't really questioned it yet- one from a depth standpoint and two- because he was the best center we had.
Did he really lose that much over an offseason to where he wouldn't be a great guy to have even as the backup C? I don't know who Fernando Velasco is, but I'd bet everyone would crap their pants and assume we're done if he must go in at some point this season.

Mawae was essential in many ways- I think that'll be more apparent as Amano tries to replace him (I don't think he can). Intelligence goes a long way at Center, and youth is all Amano has on the guy.

Just don't get it. C is one of those positions that you can't gamble with. And the constant botched snaps are a scary sight.

Agreed, but rumor has it that he might join the Vanderbilt staff.

I definately think the NFLPA thing has something to do with it. I mean he hasn't even gotten a workout from any team to my knowledge.

Yeah. I just feel like I'm driving an M6 with no insurance right now, so it's a bit frightening heading in to the city.

He may not be a high level player these days, but it never hurts to have the leadership role he bought to this team. I wish we would resign also.

At some point, you have to go with the young guys. The guys who crunch all the numbers after the season (Football Outsiders or Pro Football Focus... I forget exactly who it was) said that the 2009 numbers showed that Mawae was a below-average center.

That said, having him as a backup for the vet min is pretty much a can't-lose scenario and I would support it.

No problem with signing him for cheap as a back-up. Seems like a no lose situation. Adds depth and leadership and he knows the offense.

When I first saw that he didn't get signed in the first wave of free agency, I assumed we'd resign him. I'm surprised that he's still out there.

If Harris/Amano went down I can see us signing him.
