I think it is sooner than that, but that could be the case. They still haven't set a standard, but I am almost certain it will be 1080i.

I been trying to get Planet Earth for Blu Ray, but I know it's high cost right now so I am trying to find a good deal on it. (most sell it on ebay for over $100).

well I can tell you one thing : it won't be 1080p
    too much bandwidth
and should serve as a tool when measuring the resolutions

Gloat is trying to say that 480p looks no worse than 720p or 1080i
but i'd bet 8/10 people see dramatic difference and the other 2 are blind

    as a matter of fact, I contend a 20-30% improvement with 1080p over 1080i

but like you say, equipment really determines results

    just out of curiosity

when you're watching a BluRay and you hit the (display, info, resolution, etc.), what does it display as your resolution ?

    720p ?
    1080i ?
    1080p ?

    and I'll extend this question to anyone with a ps3 / blu / hd-dvd

The reason that it will be 1080i is because it is based the world of 29.97 thus the cost for local stations to switch over won't be nearly as expensive.

I think your average person wouldn't be able to tell the difference btwn. 1080i and 1080p.

I got Planet Earth from the WB store. After coupons, it came to around $53. Not sure if the deal is still going though

    perhaps
but I think it really factors on the display and the source

it's possible to point out differences in 1080i on different displays from the same source.
one thing I've seen people comment on re: 1080i what's considered "screen door effect" and I could see it on the 1080i DLP
    I cannot on a 1080p Lcos
which could simply be a matter of the technologies

and it all comes back to the size of the screen
50" or smaller displays should look similar
most techs will agree that 1080p is more effective on 60" or larger sets

The folks that like the "p" are the graphic people. They don't have to worry about 3:2 pulldown or the fact that it is field based. It is frame based. But I have seen 1080p on a Sony Wega LCD give that more effect as well. Depends how it was shot and such. Most your stuff that you watch is shot in or transfered in 1080i or 720p and then converted over to the required format by the broadcaster.

you couldn't tell the difference between a 1080i broadcast of Planet Earth from it's BluRay pressing ?
