When the Titans signed veteran offensive lineman Rob Turner earlier this offseason, coaches told him he’d have a chance to win a starting position.

Turner, formerly with the Rams, is getting that opportunity.

Turner worked with the first team at center earlier this week in practices, and he started Thursday’s preseason game against the Redskins. Turner has split time with returning starter Fernando Velasco in practices.

“That’s all anyone can ask for is getting a fair shake, and I think the coaches have done a good job of balancing that,’’ Turner said. “All of us have bounced around getting reps, sharing stuff and alternating days.”

Velasco started 13 games for the Titans at center last season, and three other games at guard.

The Titans aren’t ready to commit on who will start at center in Week 2 at Cincinnati. Rookie Brian Schwenke, who’s been slowed with a hamstring injury, is getting closer to returning to practice as well.

“I thought Rob played pretty well, he did a good job managing the huddle and played a pretty solid game when he was in there,’’ coach Mike Munchak said. “Guys will continue to compete and they are all going to have an opportunity for us to try and determine who’s the best guy to start.”
