Titans Insider: Webster: Decision on starting QB will be "gut feeling"
Titans general manager Ruston Webster said the competition for the starting quarterback* job between Matt Hasselbeck and Jake Locker is already well underway.

Webster said he and the coaching staff are going over practice video of the two quarterbacks on a daily basis, and that they will be charting throws and keeping statistics from practices as well.

“It’s very detailed,” Webster said. “Stats are a part of it. But like I’ve said before, I’m not a huge stats guy.”

So how does he think a decision will eventually be reached on whether to go with the veteran Hasselbeck or with Locker, who is entering his second season in the league?

“It will probably be a gut feel more than anything else,” Webster said. “I think they’ll both do well. But I think it will be a gut feel, so you kind of just go with what you feel is best – (the player) who, in a tight race, we feel like has the best chance to help us win, even though we’re comfortable with either one of them.”

Webster was asked whether the Titans would lean toward Hasselbeck’s experience if the competition was very close.

“I think you have to cross that bridge when you come to it,” Webster said. “Like I said, you’ll have a gut feeling.”

In a perfect world, the decision would be reached early in training camp, but that’s probably not realistic.

“I’d hope (that it would be made earlier than later),” Webster said, “but I’m not sure that happens.”
Titans Insider: Titans GM praises Michael Griffin's approach
Yesterday 04:00 PM
Titans safety Michael Griffin still hasn’t signed his franchise tender, and right now his agent currently isn’t negotiating a long-term deal with the team.

Still, Griffin has been working out with his teammates on a regular basis as part of the team’s offseason program, and Titans General Manager Ruston Webster on Wednesday praised his attitude.

“He has had a real good approach and he has been working hard. He is there every day,’’ Webster said of Griffin. “I appreciate his approach. It has been real good.

“Guys handle this situation different ways — you can look around the league and see that. The way he has handled it, it’s been like a pro.”

Headed into his sixth NFL season, Griffin is scheduled to make $6.2 million while playing on the franchise tag. By NFL rules, the Titans have until July 15 to sign Griffin to a long-term deal.

Griffin signed a waiver at the start of the offseason program that allows him to work out with teammates at Baptist Sports Park.

Titans Insider: Kenny Britt has minor procedure on right knee
Yesterday 02:40 PM
Titans receiver Kenny Britt had minor arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Wednesday, a procedure General Manager Ruston Webster said should accelerate his rehabilitation process.

Britt, who suffered a torn ACL and MCL last September, had been experiencing swelling in his knee in recent weeks, so doctors decided to go ahead and “clean it up.”

Webster said the procedure would likely set Britt back a week or two.

“It almost becomes commonplace,’’ Webster said of the procedure. “It is not one of those things, “Wow, oh no, he is having surgery. It is very common and if it helps his rehab process and all that, it is well worth doing. And our goal is to have him play this year.

“It will be helpful to him, I think, and probably accelerate his rehab.”

Webster, who spoke at the Comcast Spotlight Sports Speakers Series on Wednesday, said Britt ran well in recent days during workouts at Baptist Sports Park. But Britt has continued to experience swelling, something he said has been an issue in recent weeks.

*“Everything is going well,’’ Britt said last week. “The only thing I had a problem with is when my knee started swelling. I didn’t know it would do that and it kind of worried me. It was actually the low point of all this. But … it kind of comes with the territory. I am still confident with the knee.”

Instead of waiting, the Titans opted to have Dr. Burton Elrod perform the procedure on Wednesday.

Britt suffered the torn ACL and MCL on Sept. 25 against the Broncos, had surgery roughly a week later. He had 17 catches for 289 yards and three touchdowns before injury.

In his first three NFL seasons, Britt has 101 catches for 1,765 yards and 15 touchdowns in 31 games.*

Webster hopes Britt will be back for the start of the regular season.

“He is doing well, he was changing directions the other day,’’ Webster said. “It is just more how he reacts after he does that.”
