An eight-year veteran who played more than 900 snaps for the Titans last season, defensive end Kamerion Wimbley said he wasn’t expecting to spend almost all of last Sunday on the bench.

Wimbley played just six snaps in the Titans’ win over the Chargers, fewer than other reserve defensive ends such as Karl Klug (9) and Keyunta Dawson (9).

“Yeah, it was kind of surprising,” said Wimbley, who’s in the second year of a five-year, $35 million contract.

“I’d expect to take more than six snaps in a game, but all I can do is go out and practice and then on game day be prepared when my number is called to do my job.”

Wimbley has seen his playing time cut way back from last year, as he’s been on the field for just 57 of the team’s 192 defensive snaps (30 percent) this season, posting four tackles and a sack.

“Well, it’s unusual,” said Wimbley, who has 49.5 career sacks. “I would definitely like to be out there in the game and be active. But like I say, all I can do is come to practice and work hard and trust the coaches’ decisions on gameday.

“I feel like we’ve been able to do some good things defensively, so I’m happy about that. You never know how it will play out as far as our rotation. So I just keep working and don’t really worry too much about it — or try not to worry too much about it.”

Titans coach Mike Munchak said earlier in the week that Wimbley had so few snaps because the team used defensive packages featuring bigger linemen against the Chargers.

“Some of those packages get called more than others on game day,” Wimbley said. “When those packages (with me) come up, that will be my opportunity to go in, and some games they may be called more than in other games.”

When they weren't using Wimbley during the preseason, I thought it was just to see what they had with Pitoitua and Klug. That's obviously not the case.

He's not playing up to his contract and the clock is ticking.

I'm wondering if there isn't something in his contract that pays him more based on playing time. As good as Pitoitua has played, Wimbley is not that bad. He may not be as good against the run but he is a solid pass rusher on passing downs.

I don't know, he's pretty bad. Pitoitua doesn't generate a lot of pressure, but he's been making a difference out there......Wimbley is invisible on the field :rimshot:

I think he is a good pass rusher, but it his in inability to contribute in run defense that keeps him off the field. When this team is able to build some leads I think Wimbley will see more involvement in pass rushing packages.

Then again considering his contract I don't see him being a Titan after this season. His trade value is basically nothing I presume.

when you have a good player, you find ways to get them on the field. When you have a bad 1 dimensional player, you give excuses as to why they aren't out there.

Yes, Wimbley is that bad. He had seven sacks his last year with the Raiders and three of them came in one game against the Chargers when they had their backup LT in the game. He had six sacks last year because he played over 900 snaps.

That guy is a bum. I couldn't believe the Titans paid him that amount of money.
