It is tough to make such a claim which gave up 57 points, but as the Giants and Broncos have shown, with the perfect storm of poor play combined with offensive turnovers and overall ineptitude, it can happen.

We are currently 22nd in the league by allowing 24.1 points per game. But it looks worse than it is. On a snap to snap basis, this is a good defense, and superior to the one from 2016.

    Rush Defense:
The run defense was one of the best last year. It is better this year. We are currently allowing 3.6 YPC, good for 5th in the league, compared to 4.0 last year, and 3 of our 8 matchups have been against teams in the top 10 in YPC. We have been the best in the league in terms of limited runs of 15 yards or more, currently allowing such plays on 1% of runs (per PFF)

    Pass Defense:
The passing defense still appears to have issues, but it is also an improved unit. We are allowing 6.4 yards per attempt, tied for 4th best in the leaue. We were 15th a year ago with 7.2 Y/A. The QB rating allowed is 83.7 (11th), compared to 88.3 (15th) in 2016. We are tied for 7th in INTs with 9, just 3 behind our 12 recorded in 2016 (tied for 18th).

    Overall Defense:
Byard's 5 interceptions in the past couple of games have skewed the QB rating some, but if you look at the entire picture, the defense has been doing their job. Opposing teams are converting only 35.6% of their 3rd downs, tied for 9th with, and this is shocking, Jacksonville. We were actually quite good last year as well at 36.7%.

    So What Is The Problem?

We are limiting big run plays. We are limiting big pass plays. We are getting opposing offenses off the field on third down. We are forcing turnovers. So why does this not look like a top 10 defense?

The offense. It sucks. We are top 12 in Points per game, Rushing yards per game, and yards per carry. We are also 27th in terms of first downs gained (compared to 18th last year), 28th in 3rd down conversion percentage at 34.0% (compared to 46.1% in 2016, 3rd overall). We are currently 31st in the league in plays per drive at 5.27 and 27th in TOP per drive, compared to 5.81 plays per drive (21st) and 16th in TOP per drive in 2016.

Compare that to Jacksonville, who is tied for 8th in first downs and 11th in 3rd down conversion percentage, and top 2 in YPC and YPG. We are clamoring over their defense, when they are outplaying us at our own game on offense as much as anything. They even barely edged us out in passing offense.

The defense cannot get off the field. The offense has every resource with which to thrive as a physical, clock-hogging unit, and they are a liability. So if we continue to point fingers, let's keep pointed somewhere other than the defense.

I see the offense start to click when we hit the stretch of games Indy, Texans, Cards, and 49ers.....as of right now those teams are ranked 1st, 3rd, 6th and 2nd in terms of giving up the most points per game.

We still don't have no pass rush. With the qb's we played the past three games they should got way more sacks then they got.

Do you have a link to that? I was reading the analysis after our game against the Browns, and they described our defensive unit as "suffocating". I thought it was referring to that particular game, but after the Ravens game, they used a similar adjective to describe our defense. I was more shocked to learn how good they have been rather than how inefficient and awful our offense has been.

It's been pretty easy to see just watching the games that the D has really stepped up since the Houston debacle. Usually D is giving the offense plenty of chances, which they haven't taken advantage of.

Late in the game when Mularkey and Co are trying to grind out a 3 point lead with a quarter and a half of football to go and the BS prevent defense comes in to play is when things get dicey.

Defense is pretty stout until late and the offense struggles to put up points and it's almost inevitable that the opponent scores and keeps it close.
