    LIONS LEANING TO THOMAS
    ProFootballTalk

Ah, the first draft day rumor of the 2007 offseason.

A source with knowledge of the Lions' plans tells us that the team currently intends to draft Wisconsin tackle Joe Thomas with the second pick in the draft.

The disclosure surprises us, since this draft will present another opportunity (see 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005) to use a top-end pick on a supposedly elite offensive player who then never lives up to his billing.

Even if the Raiders draft Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn or LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell, the Lions could have the other guy or Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson (who is, in our estimation, a turd-free Randy Moss).

The ultimate irony, of course, would be for the Lions to pass on a quarterback or Johnson based on the team's past experiences, and then for the guy they don't take to blossom into a Hall of Famer.

And we're not reporting that the Lions will draft Thomas no matter what. Last year, a prominent NFL analyst who will remain nameless (*cough* . . . <Mort> . . . *cough*) said that the Texans were definitely going to draft Reggie Bush.

    WHERE DOES QUINN STACK UP?

In response to our item from Tuesday night regarding the Lions' leanings toward tackle Joe Thomas with the No. 2 pick in the draft, a league source with extensive experience selecting college players tells us that it's far too early for any team to be making such suggestions.

"In Thomas' case, yes he played well, but he also tore his ACL last year in their bowl game," said the source. "Team doctors need to look at the knee and see how good the surgery was."

Then again, details like that might be lost on the Lions.

The more stunning aspect of the communication was the source's indictment of Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn.

"Anyone who thinks Quinn is the first player or even JaMarcus Russell is smoking too much dope," said the source. "Just because they may be the top quarterbacks doesn't mean they will be drafted at the first spot. Hell, I wouldn't draft Quinn in the first 20 and maybe not in the first round. He chokes in every big game."

Joe Thomas knee MRI has made the rounds already to most team docs and he has hardly any meniscal issues so i doubt the ACL in last yrs Music City Bowl knocks him from the top 3..............The surgery went well he has perfromed well to date.............his lateral motion was bad this past summer but he got back to his groove in Oct.............
