In the two weeks since he was moved into the defensive end rotation on passing downs, linebacker Akeem Ayers has responded with two sacks and three quarterback pressures.

The Titans would love to see what he could do with even more opportunity to pass rush. Ayers’ chances were limited last week in a one-sided loss to Chicago.

“Last week we didn’t have a whole lot of nickel rushes because of (Chicago’s) lead, and there wasn’t a lot of third downs for them throwing the ball,” Titans coach Mike Munchak said. “(But) I do think he’ll continue to get better and you probably will see him rotating in more on third down, two-minute, that kind of stuff, when we are pass rushing because I think he can make plays for us.”

A key to moving Ayers to defensive end in passing situations has been the improvement of rookie Zach Brown, who has been able to assume nickel linebacker responsibilities alongside Colin McCarthy.

Brown led the Titans with 11 tackles last week, including two tackles for loss.

“That was a big part of drafting Zach,” Munchak said, “not only to start at (weakside linebacker), but to play nickel linebacker so that Akeem could be part of the (pass-rushing rotation).”

Now if we only ran a 3-4 so he could be rushing all the time, getting mismatches and the whole deal :(.

I'm not one to call for a man's job. But all I heard last year when they drafted this cat was what a good pass rusher he was. All I heard last year was the he had "special pass rush ability." And from what I've seen when he's put his hand in the dirt, he's our best pass rusher. The fact that it took until a third of the way through his second season for Mr Gray to figure out how to get 56 rushing the passer is an indicator of his shortcomings as a D cordinator, along with other things.
