Both sides are saying the right things right now. The same issues remain in that Albert has played one solid season. I'd love to see him play at a high level into October before settling on a deal.

If I've read things correctly, the rules about the franchise tag stipulate that if he hasn't agreed to a long term deal by July 15 (I think that's the right date) then he can only sign the one year tender until the end of the season.

Right. So we'd pay him the franchise deal for the season.

I remember reading somewhere that he said he wouldn't sign with us next year if we just stuck with the franchise tag for this season, but we'll see.

He can be franchised more than one season. Obviously, neither side wants to go down that road but it's not like he'll walk in '09 if he's franchised all of '08.

He can be franchised AGAIN in '09. This team franchised Blaine Bishop for years.

It's not ideal for either side so I don't see it happening but if a long-term deal isn't reached by July 15, it's not like Albert is going to be an UFA at the end of the season. The Titans will retain his rights. They are just obligated to pay the franchise amount instead of rolling it into a long-term deal after July 15.

  8. I don't think Bishop was franchised more than once...

I wouldn't be surprised if Albert does something similar to what Samuel and Briggs did last year when they got tagged if they haven't worked out a deal by 15 July.

Samuel and Brigs both negotiated clauses into their one-year contract that prohibited their teams from franchising them again if they met certain incentives.
Both players met these incentives and are due to become free agents next week.

Also, when the CBA was amended in 2006, there was a clause put in that basically made it very difficult for clubs to tag a player 3 or more times. The 1-year tender significantly increases if you are tagged for the 3rd time.

The 3rd time tagged is the average of the 5 top QB's salaries.
