Good call on Russell. I do watch a lot of Seahawk games and he is not very vocal and loud. He leads by his play, guy is a very good QB.

We have been running deep routes. They require the qb to release the ball before he knows the wr will break open and lead him enough to give him a chance to make the play. Marcus was lacking in both of those attributes.

Here are the job qualifications:

He must be self driven and energetic in making plays work.

He's got to be honest and willing to blame himself when plays don't work.

He must have more than a one track mind, like a rainbow full of colors he needs to be all over that field.

He's got to be involved in every aspect of the play by what he knows. And he knows by studying game film what to look for and how to proceed. Defensive positioning springs forth from offensive formations that then lead to a defensive reaction. It's the anticipation and then exploitation of those reactions that he must implement in his play calling. Determining weakness by what other teams successfully have done and make them his strength. Habitual defensive movements when the ball is snapped should be known like the back of his hand.

For starters, all this is his job to know. During the week, he is the hardest worker on the team, he is sitting down with his QB and explaining what to look for and when to change the designed plays.

You don't just stand there with your thumb up your @$$ and call plays, you got to know what the hxll you're doing out there.

Now there is another fasset to play calling. It's called throwing off a defense and causing them to play honest. Good play callers can cause a defense to be so confused that they cannot stop the offense period. The play caller must have the aptitude in mixing up the formations and plays in such a way that anything can sprout forth from them.

On first down: QB sneak with five receivers near the sideline. A bomb to a WR with two TEs and two HBs in the game. On and on going thru all the different plays and formations. The play caller must be innovative.

The last job requirement is how blocks are carried out. The QB does not stand in the middle of the pocket to be attacked from three locations, you take either the left/center or right/center side of the defense out of the play. The QB shifts to the right and all blocking shifts to the right as well. Forget about the middle left, everyone shifts and doubles up against the right. The QB will have all the time in the world to throw it even run, shuffle pass, screen. Commit, be burned. You take the meat and mustle of their defense and trash it. That's what good play callers do. Block those troublesome DBs and burn um.

I was hoping for good play calling for Mariota's sake but that's not gonna happen. And it won't happen for Tannehill either unless changes are made. Just know how important play calling is and why most teams don't make it to the playoffs. It's not the QB!
