Posted by ESPN.com's Paul Kuharsky
The Texans have re-signed veteran safety Nick Ferguson, who was an unrestricted free agent.

The team is moving forward expecting that Eugene Wilson, another free agent it re-signed, is the starter at free safety, while Dominique Barber, a sixth-round draft pick out of Minnesota last year, mans strong safety.

But GM Rick Smith and coach Gary Kubiak like Ferguson as a locker room and team culture guy who can provide depth.

Ferguson spent five seasons in Denver on Mike Shanahan's Broncos, and Smith and Kubiak place a value on players familiar with the environment from which they both came.

In nine seasons the 34-year old Ferguson has played in 122 games with 54 starts, including seven at strong safety and two at free safety for the 2008 Texans.
