One day after defensive coordinator Jerry Gray said rookie Mike Martin would likely get some first-team reps, he followed through by giving the defensive tackle that chance during Thursday’s practice.

“I just have been very steady and conscious in trying to get better every day and improving and showing the coaches that they can count on me,” said Martin, a third-round pick out of Michigan. “It’s been something I’m trying to do every day and take steps toward improving every day. Like I said, executing on Saturday is going to be my main goal.”

Martin said he’s not sure whether he’ll get first-team action against the Seahawks on Saturday, but does expect to get “a lot of reps” in the Titans’ preseason opener.

“I just want to let it loose out there, play the way I know I can play,” Martin said. “I know what we’re going to run defensively and my technique and all that. So just go out there and execute on that and everything will be fine.”

I'm very excited about this player. I think he has a good chance to see A LOT of time at DT -- Casey is the obvious #1, but I'm not sure after that; Klug may just be a pass rush specialist, and Marks/Smith haven't shown enough to be the #2 starter -- Martin can be that guy!

I had Martin rated as an early 2nd rnd player. I was thrilled when we picked him up in the 3rd rnd. Their are no doubts with him that you will get 100% effort. The guy is a beast and probably is the strongest guy on the team. I think him and Casey will make a nice duo to collapse the pocket and stuff the run.

In terms of rookie impact I think he is the guy that improves our team the most.

Same. I was thrilled to get him in the third. I believe he will make that front 4 a very strong force. Wimbley/Casey/Martin/Morgan could really do good if they pan out. Alot of ?s with that tho. Revolving players.

We definitely got a good value there getting him in the 3rd. Almost makes me feel better about wasting a pick on SenDerrick Marks.

I got to watch Martin on Monday at the scrimmage. Dude is a force. I was sitting with a bunch of Falcons fans and they kept saying, "why can't we block that guy?"

Had a decent showing against the 2-3s. Got in the back field 4 times I believe. Had some good hustle. Was always around the ball at the end of the play. I'd like to see him with the 1s beside Casey.
