Projectors are great, just make sure that you have a room you can get completely dark. You don't even need to invest in a screen as long as you have a flat wall you can paint white. You can mount them on the ceiling to save floor space, and run the display 180 degrees out (inverted) and pretty much have a theater with today's DLPs.
Yep. Just running the numbers and routine usage if it's worth it.
Depends on your priorities, I suppose. I've been doing warranty work for various manufacturers since 1995, but didn't get away from CRTs (old fashioned tube television) in my own home until 2012.
Today's options are much better and cheaper than ever before.
If you're seriously in the market, pick up a model with the highest contrast ratio and most nits (highest brightness) in your price range.
