You got the right idea, but not entirely.
If you can successfully overload one side or the other, that has the same effect as coming up the middle.
And why haven't we ran more stunt type pass-rushes/blitzes, where Brown and Jones clog the middle DTs, and KVB or Kearse loop around and go in between them?

what do QBs usually do when they feel the pocket collapsing ... one hint ... they usually don't step sideways & then throw ... just saying

If there's no room to sidestep, then they're going to roll out one way or another. But if the pocket collapes fast enough, they won't have time to run.
Kinda like in the preseason when Vickerson pushed Buffalo's OT right into Edwards....no time to run.

    Not really...

First, a free blitzer up the middle is VERY different from a free blitzer from the outside. A LB coming up the middle is in the QB's face and prevents him from stepping forward and following through. Furthermore, he gets there much faster and forces and immediate decision from the QB. Throw it or get sacked.

A rusher from the outside gives the QB more time to make a decision, is NOT in his face and doesn't stop the QB from stepping into his throw or rolling to buy more time...as even a slow QB like Brady did.

If you try to buy more time from a rusher up the middle, you have to pull the ball down. Up the middle pressure is vastly better for the above reasons. Also there is a chance a 'free' OG could slide and potentially pick that guy up. Furthermore...even without free rushers...pressure from the outside a QB can step up and avoid and tear your D apart. Pressure up the middle gives your DE's a better chance to get to the QB and stops the QB from stepping up effectively. He also feels more rushed.

Secondly, the Titans have been stunting DL...we just haven't been very successful with it outside of a handful of times.

With some teams, it's not about winning at all cost, it's about sticking with your personal philosophy. Chuck/Mike and Fisher will get more pride making their schemes work 4 years down the road than winning a SB now.

Gut, you and DNH might want to go back and read the article again, because...
The last time I checked, that's overloading one side.
It's gunna be a moot point if there are more blitzers than there are blockers. The QB isn't going to have time to make a decision if he has a defender within his arm's length even before he finishes his his (3,5 or 7) step drop...regardless of where they're coming from.
