Home games do more than give a competitive advantage. They also generate revenue for the team and for the city and are good for the little guy (the fans).

Regardless, I'm against anything that lessens the importance of division rivalries.

I don't think you can really devalue the divisional rivalries as long as they're playing twice a year. The divisional rivalries seem to come largely from familiarity with the other teams.

You are right, but that's per game. The difference is in basketball they play a series so for part of the games the advantage goes one team's way, but then the other part of the series the advantage goes the other way, so you break even. In football, there's only one game, so one team gets the advantage and one doesn't.

    Home field doesn't really matter..

The only reason home teams win more often is because they were better in the first place. A 14-2 team usually will beat a 10-6 team but there are exceptions like the giants this year or the steelers in 05.

Home field doesn't matter if you have great defense and can run the football. Why would it?

I believe it effects you greater emotionally than phyisically. But let's ignore the emotional aspects and just focus on some of the physical.

    1. You know the field: Example, the Oilers used to play on what amounted to a curved surface. If you looked from one endzone to the next, you would only see half of the player on the other goal line. Knowing the lay of the land, crucial. Look at our field. A piece of crap. Knowing it inside and out is an advantage.

    2. Hearing? In KC, you can't hear the player next to you. IN football, with audibles, it's huge.

    3. Sleeping in your own bed. Have you ever been in a hotel? Not the same. Sometimes better. Sometimes worse. But definately different. If you can't sleep, big advantage.

    4. Weather. Yeah, both teams are cold, but one team knows where the snow melts and where it doesn't, where the field drains and where it doesn't. One team has played twice as many games in the snow, so they make their adjustments faster to things like gloves, shoes, ect.. Big Advantage.

Those are just four. Home field is a big deal.

Now as for the things you cannot measure, like momentum. I personally think that the crowd lifts you to a higher level. There is no way to measure it, but it's like hitting a jump shot to me. After you hit it, you have that little bounce, you get back faster on defense, and when you don't, you just dont feel the same. That is how I look at crowds. They give you something you would not ordinarily have. And they can do the opposite. They can kill you too. But more oft than not the crowd is going to back you and provide that little unknown bounce in your step.

So my own opinion is that there are real tangliuble benefits that are measurable, and some that are not.
