The name of the Oakland Raiders’ starting quarterback this week isn’t a familiar one to most people, but Titans coach Mike Munchak knows a thing or two about his background.

It turns out that both Munchak and Matt McGloin, who was named Wednesday as a starter for the second straight week, are Scranton, Pa., natives who went to Penn St.

McGloin, who was undrafted out of Penn St., led the Raiders to a win in his first NFL start last week, throwing three touchdowns and zero interceptions against Houston. Munchak said McGloin is already making inroads on Munchak’s popularity in Scranton.

“I think he’s taken over,” Munchak said. “(As a fan), you always go with the player rather than the coach, I think. I’m really happy for him.

“I’ve obviously heard his story … a guy that walked on and was told he couldn’t do it starts at Penn St., and then he was told he couldn’t make in the NFL, and he’s starting in the NFL and wins a football game in a tough place to win in a game they needed badly.”

Munchak said he met McGloin’s father last year when he returned to Penn State for former coach Joe Paterno’s memorial service.

“(McGloin) went to West Scranton and I went to Scranton Central,” Munchak said. “That area is really big on following their players. People get to know athletes really well in all sports … I’m sure there’s lot of Raiders fans and Titans fans in Scranton.”

Munchak said he was impressed with what McGloin did last week in Houston.

“Matt did a great job last week, three touchdowns for a rook and not making mistakes against a good defense,” Munchak said. “I’m really happy for him. I hope he has a great day, but doesn’t get a win.”
