Chop blocks are terribly dirty plays when done intentionally. You still see some guys do it on accident where one guy is about to cut someone and then the guy next to him blocks him at the same time or just before the cut. That's just unfortunate.

But I am glad they're not getting rid of cut blocks. It's a very useful, low danger block, mostly on the back side of a play where you aim at a guys thigh and take them out that way. Some guys aim at a guys knee, which is a bit dirty, but that's not really the most effective way to do it because you can completely whiff or the defender can just step over you. Go at his thigh and go down and you have a much bigger target, low chance of injury, and the guy has to use his hands to get you off him, which is effective for 3 step drop passes too.

My old coach used to tell us to aim for the crotch on quick passes. No better way in the world to keep a guys hands down!

I dont have a problem with the block.

As for kickoffs, they are taking baby steps to do away with 1/3 of the game. Im not a fan of this. A lot can happen on special teams.

This one might backfire as a few kickers will learn how to add hang time and drop it inside the 10.

Guaranteed. And guys are going to get leveled or have to fair catch it.

I heart Pat Kirwan and Jim ? saying they'd improve it by having games start with the kicking team punting the ball (full punt formation). That way there could be a blocked kick etc and it would also set up returns a bit better. Punt plays have lower injuries (statistically).

Thats why they're trying it out on a 1-year trial. Hard to know what will happen before getting the #s...

Too bad that didn't work with the PATs moving back to the 15. The numbers looked like kickers all over the league were missing PATs when in reality it was like four kickers bringing down the percentage by a significant amount.
