Posted by ESPN.com's Paul Kuharsky
SAN DIEGO -- The Chargers' defense had been waiting and waiting, not showing what they planned on a play until the play clock was down to about 10 seconds.

Then they tried a player substitution and got caught sleeping, saw the Colts hurry a play instead of making all their adjustments and got burned for a giant scoring play -- Peyton Manning to Reggie Wayne for 72 yards and a touchdown over an unaware Antonio Cromartie -- that put the Colts up 17-14 in the third period.

It's the kind of play that begs for a thorough breakdown, especially if the lead holds up.

My hope is to try to dissect it for you after this is over.

But the Chargers are driving, so things may change again quickly.

Peyton is the most valuable cheap shot artist, but that didn't prevent yet another playoff choke for him...lol...

If the dolts substituted then the Chargers are allowed too. Not saying the dolts did, but Michaels and Madden were too busy telling me how "smart" Gayton is to tell me if he is cheating!

I agree it was a smart play, especially because it directly resulted in points. It was not a "cheap shot" as many people are posting. Manning recognized the opportunity and executed the play.

Don't take offense from what you saw, take notes. We made need something like that to finish the season as Super Bowl Champs.

While it is perfectly legal, and it was smart, it's still scheisty, and a 'cheap shot' if you will. If an MVP level caliber player such as Manning has to resort to cheap plays like that to win (which they didn't...HA HA HA), what does that say about him?

I guarantee that Fisher won't let something like that happen when the Colts come to LP field next wee...oh wait, we won't see the Colts again until next year.

Was definitely an example of how you cannot fall asleep on the field against them at any time.

No kidding. As if Norv shouldn't have already been aware of that. They've done it before.
They've even done it before to the point where there were a couple of times that Indy would sub, then when the defense would sub, Manning would snap the ball. Since that is illegal, the officials even said something to Dungy, that he cannot do that again or he will be penalized. It was the season before last IIRC.

It was the only way the league's "MVP" could get a touchdown pass evidently...
