The term "wife beater", "wife bee", "beater" came from the fact that on the old school Cops shows, nearly every guy that was arrested for domestic violence was wearing a white tank top.

White tank tops became synonymous with wife beating. It ain't right, but it is what it is.

 

so, what's up with that?

 

Now that you mention it, there does seem to be an unusually large amount of white tank tops on the wife beaters in those shows.
