You are talking about one game. What about how they got that far in the first place?

The Saints in 2009 ran the ball 468 times for over 2100 yards. That's 29 running plays for 132 yards a game.

Also it seems like teams that build a hard nose rushing power team, tend to spend the rest of their time on defense.

If you can run the ball consistently whenever you want, you can keep your high powered defense on the side line, well rested. Ready to go make a quick three and out. And then you can control more clock. Even in this case, getting field goals can win you a game as long as your defense holds up.

High powered passing attacks seems to work primarily on offense and multiple WRs and outlets. Many many weapons, thus the defense gets less attention and the idea is score. Always score. The defense can be lack luster if you always score. Then if the other offense can't move the ball really well, you get up on them quick and never stop.

As for a great back strangling an offense? I don't think so but we all know that a great QB is worth much more. A great back can make a bad team competitive or a competitive team good. To get beyond that you need a QB and a defense.

Simply do what you're built to do, and do it better than the other team.

The giants have done a good job at building high talented areas on their defensive front and their wrs. But even then they are average at times when Eli sucks it up. Their running games has fell off recently. Pass rush and targets are their main areas.

What did they just do in the draft? Replace a WR they lost in FA...

If the ability to throw the ball could make a super bowl team all by itself the Lions would be a super bowl team. They were #1 in pass attempts, #31 in rushing attempts and 4th in scoring offense. Unfortunately for them you can't go to the super bowl giving up 45 points a game.

They have one of the most dynamic defensive players in the league so is their style of offense a reason their defense was so terrible? I don't think you can ignore that.

I believe the Saints were #1 that year in rushing.

People do get carried away with focusing on one game, the SB and using stats in that one game to justify something. It is only one game. Even looking at playoff numbers can get screwy since in all honesty the best team doesn't get to the SB all the time or win it. The teams that make it are the teams that endured a long season, got hot and/or healthy at the right time (the Colts defense in 2009) and played their best ball when they needed to. Heck, a wild card team has almost as much chance of getting into a SB as a #1 seed. Since 1999 when the Titans made it to the SB 6 WC teams made it to the big dance and 5 of those won. Point being the make up of those teams (who didn't even win their division) shouldn't be looked on as the template for a team to make the SB but they did.

JCBrave does make a point that whatever you do do something real good. A team like the Pats or Saints who had the best offenses in the league pass the ball real well. But you also better have some other components to your game that although might not be the greatest asset can contribute. Be it defense, running game, STs (look at the Colts all those years who had great records but couldn't get over the hump). Be real good at one thing but certainly don't suck in the other areas. IMO a balanced team that isn't the best at any one thing but is decent at most things can get hot at the right time and win a SB.

The biggest obstacle IMO is that there are 32 teams and only one can win the SB.

A 60/40 defensive team can win it as long as the offense has the right pieces.

Steelers come to mind. Big Ben can sling it, Wallace can catch it. Run the ball well enough and watch your defense kill the opposing qb and you are in.

Score more points than the other team?

That formula has never failed me. Well except twice for the Vols when the refs took points away after the game was over.
