I'm surprised it took this long before I had a credit card number stolen.

Two charges in California on Sunday totaling $1500, Lowes and Babies-R-Us, have shown up on my account. According to the credit card rep I spoke with last night, they spend $3.00 at a McDonald's too.

I'd love to know how they got the number and physically put it on a card. Anyone else ever deal with this?

Not personally.. at least it was a credit card and not a debit card.. you can get the credit card issues fixed fairly easily I would expect, doubt that with a debit card fraud. I've held out getting a debit card for fear of this stuff =/

Is the cc company able to figure out how someone got a hold of your number?

They have no idea according to the rep I spoke to last night.

It must be pretty common for someone to physically make a credit card. They had a big day buying up stuff they could sell for cash before the card company shut it down.

Is this going to affect your credit score or anything? I would hope this kind of stuff would be wiped.

According to Wiki, the cardholder is not responsible. If the actual card was stolen, it would be limited to $50.

It happend to me about 4 years ago. Never did figure how but some kind soul ran up about $2000 in video gaming and such in mexico. Funny thing was while we were on the phone reporting it another charge was coming in for another $500 in gaming stuff. Of course the credit card company declined and told the store to destroy the card and called the police. Don't know what really happened but the card company claimed they would prosecute the individual. We were not responsible for any of the charges.

So do you guys have to get a new credit card number? ..I would expect the guy in CA still has your number and his card so he could still use it in the future yeah?

I've had it happen and it seems to be a more and more common occurrence. Same thing for me with some bogus charges in California and somehow Visa was on top of it and called me the day it happened asking if the charges were legit. I was also not responsible for any of the charges.

Also happened to a friend a mine a year ago, and they believe his number was stolen from a gas station pump.

Yeah, happened to me a few years ago. I found it shockingly easy to deal with. Just called VISA, reported the theft and they said they would reverse all the charges and send me a new card. That was about it. I think maybe it helped that the charges were super obviously fraudulent (pretty sure VISA had seen the exact same thing happening to other people at the same time).

I've had 2 credit card numbers stolen in the past.

Got a bill once and saw I was in Spain, but I was in my house reading the bill LOL. Just called VISA up and told them the situation, they removed the charges, issues new cards to me and the wife and that was that.

They have you sign an affidavit, then investigate it. Since my story was legit, I didn't have to pay the $900 some clown charged on my account.
