Carl Nicks, easily a top-5 G, is an UFA this year. Nicks is a force in the middle, and would be a HUGE upgrade for any OL, but he wants to get PAID.

So he wants Jahri Evans type of money (here's Jahris contract:

So my question is, would you guys want Nicks if he cost record guard money? He's only 26, so a deal like 7yr/60M isn't insane, is it? That would be roughly 8M a year cap hit, and would still give us 20+M to spend on other FAs, and we'd still need a new center.

    Yes. Do it.

Grubbs is the only other quality option at G... if we could get him for cheaper than Nicks, I'm all for it.

If I were a owner, I would never sign off on giving 60M for any Guard in the NFL.

I would be very, very hesitant about giving that kind of contract to a guard. It would severely restrict you from locking up your tackles and center (more important positions) down the road.

I'd say no. And I think the Titans will, too.

The last two posts is what i'm thinking. Nicks is an amazing guard, but do you really want to lock up $60M on a guard? Personally, I'm saying no. If we do sign Nicks, we still have to fix the center position. I only see Konz as a potential day 1 starter, and do NOT want to see Amano under the helm again. We'd also need to take Konz Rd 1, or lock even more money up at C in FA. Amano is also pretty highly paid for guards, we'd probably be paying the most in the NFL for guards, or damn near close.

I agree pay less for a center and let Amano, Harris, Velasco and a mid-rnd draft pick fight it out for the OG spots.

If you have money to spend in FA, I think you should look to spend it on positions that are hard to find in the draft. Don't blow a big bunch on an OG when you could easily upgrade that position with an early draft pick.

I would not have given Amano 5yr 25 million either, still shocked that he is making that kind of jack and his play doesnt warrant the NFL min. at C.

H311 to the naw fam. That's not only too rich for our blood, that's just too much period.

It makes more sense to shuffle guys around than to throw big money like this. Move Harris back to C where he played well and let Amano, Velasco, Otto and Matthews fight out the other spots. I never did like the idea of Amano playing C and I think we all agree that was a bad bad idea.

Well at the time we signed him he was 27, and was extremely good at guard. Was also surrounded by one of the most dominant OLs in the NFL with a prime Roos, Stewart, and Scott all paired with vet Mawae.

He's basically get 4M-5M (because of signing bonus), basically making him a Top-5 paid center... at guard money he's only roughly Top-15 every year. At the time he was a Top-15 guard (and was still young), so I can see why we gave him that money.

Sadly, he sucks at center. I'm hoping moving him back to LG will bring him back to his 2008 form.

No need to pay Jahri Evans money to Carl Nicks when the next Jahri Evans can be drafted in the 3rd or 4th round. Learn the name Amini Silatolu because he's the next great NFL Guard, and I hope we get him in the 3rd round.
