Can you swim 9 miles?

    Ive been forced to swim to shore 1/2 mile out, that was one of the hardest things I ever had to do, 9 miles is amazing.

    Only if I back-stroke it most of the way. Ever so often you have to stop and just tread water with your legs to give your arms a rest.

    The major problem is that if you are nine miles out, with winter coastal currents in South Florida you're probably adding another few miles in southward drift.
    Any way you look at it, this guy is pretty lucky to be alive.
    That said, I would never boat like that without some sort of GPS body attachment/alarm..

    Absolutely agree. If I'm on any kind of water craft I wear a life jacket an have at my disposal a means of communication, and usually another flotation device.

    In life or death situations your body and mind can do things you never thought possible. Can I go swim 9 miles at my localgym? MMaybe not. If I had to to survive and see my family and hold my kids? I'd swim 90 miles
