    i don't think a bird would starve to death
    there's more probability for them to die in a cage than on their own
    let them go near (or at) your house and keep putting out food, like on a deck
    or maybe ...... a bird feeder ? :yes:

    ... and as a rule it's really not a great idea to release non-indigenous species into the wild.

    Unfortunately that's not the case. Smaller captive species have almost no chance for survival outdoors. They have no food foraging skills and will starve in two or three days if they don't get killed by a predator even sooner. If it's wintertime you can expect the time to be much shorter. Small captives are totally dependent on their owners.
