I'm not talking about Paying the recruits to come play. I'm talking about Athletic budget and money to spend on recruiting.

That is a good point. If Bear Bryants equivelant were to coach UT in today's competitive environment he would probably have a record about the same as Fulmer. Since 1992, 16 years, SEC teams have won 6 National championships (7 possibly if Auburn didn't get scewed in 1993). About 40% of the time a team from the SEC wins the national championship. If you throw the 1993 Auburn team in the mix that is also 5 different teams.

Also, consistently ever year the SEC puts a couple or more teams into the top 10 and around 6 in the top 25. For example, in 1992 when Alabama won Georgia was 8th in the final poll, Florida 10th (Tennessee 12th). Heck Ole Miss and Miss State both made the top 25.

Last year Georgia ended up number 3 in the nation (#2 in some polls). In 2006 Florida won the championship and the SEC finished with 3 teams in the top 10. In 2005, VY's year, the SEC had 3 teams in the top 10.

Bottom line is there is no way any coach will be able to have the year in and year out success of some of these teams in the past. The competition is just too great and there are too many variables like injuries, players flunking out of school, players getting in trouble and such. Even the lower level teams like Vandy are capable of giving the top teams close games and occasionally winning. Actually the SEC comes as close to any conference in being like the NFL where conference games are very competitive and almost any team on a given day can win. Add in the SEC championship game which is nothing but a tough playoff game and expecting a team to consistently win championships just in the SEC, not even looking at nationally is quite a bit to expect.

So you are right. No one is going to top Bear Bryant.

That is right. They got screwed and should have played USC. Instead USC demolished OU. Auburn went undefeated and got 2nd in the nation and was clearly screwed by the stupid system we have.

This thread may gain more relevance as the season goes along. If the same Tennessee team shows up against Florida, Georgia ect. we will be discussing this subject a lot. Again... they gave him a raise and extension for stumbling *** backward into the sec championship and getting busted again. We lose a season opener on the west coast again. This one is much worse. This UCLA team has nowhere near as much talent as Cal did last year and UCLA rolled on us in the second half. What was Fulmer's adjustments at halftime? rollover? Fire Phil.
