I must say in a way I agree. I hope I'm wrong. It just seems to be our MO to stick with the vet until he completely crashes and burns.

I do expect Locker to take over at some point this season. I just think short of an absolutely jaw-dropping pre-season/camp from Locker, this is Hasselbeck's job.

That's what I think will happen. But what I want to happen is for Locker to start right away. You gotta get the kid in there to get some real experience at some point. The sooner he gets thrown in the fire the sooner he takes his lumps and (hopefully) improves. This is a totally different situation from Rodgers. We don't have a legend like Favre on the roster. We merely have a 36 (soon to be 37) year old vet who has never been much more than above-average.

    What does everyone else think?

Yeah, the battle is a sham. They want to give Hasselbeck every opportunity to succeed. He has to fail or break down for Locker to take over. It's Hasselbeck's job to lose, IMO. I think they believe that.

If that is our coaching staff's way of thinking, then we need a new coaching staff. Throwing Hass out to take the brunt of a tough early schedule when he does not give us the best chance to win is gutless.

I hope that's not the case at all. Because I believe with all my being that Jake gives this team the best chance to win. Hasselbeck has him beat in the experience dept. but I think that argument has worn thin. Physically, Jake has him beat in every area. The experience and know-how will come with playing time.

I don't think it's premature or far-fetched to say that Jake has the makings to become the best QB this franchise has ever had. And I say that with all due respect to Steve and Warren.

I think it's Hasselbeck's job because the front office is still looking at the really big picture and doesn't want to put Locker out there for those brutal first five games on the schedule and have him emerge 0-5. I think Hasselbeck probably does give the Titans the best chance to weather the brunt of that schedule and emerge 2-3 or something like that.

I think the front office believes that it will be better for the Locker's development if he comes when Hasselbeck gets hurt or falters (which will happen at some point during the season) and runs with things from there.

Frankly, I think I probably agree with that line of thinking.

Is Jeff F'n Fisher still our coach?

    Jesus.

I'm on the brink of annoyed with what has been coming across the Titans beat the past couple of days.

It is and should be Hasselbeck's job to lose.

Until he does something to lose it- or until Locker does something to win it- why would there be a change?

I can kinda sorta see that line of thinking. But we drafted the guy 8th overall and he's got to take his lumps at some point. If we're putting the two-tone blue glasses aside and being real, the Titans are not going to be a Super Bowl contender this year. Which IMO makes this the perfect time to hand the keys over to Locker.

If not, here's what I foresee happening... We're good this year, but not THAT good. Then next season while most of the rest of the team is going to be improved/more experienced we're going to be rolling with what is essentially a rookie QB. And we're going to be good, but not THAT good yet again. Sometimes the potential to be great next year trumps being just 'good' the present year. That's my opinion anyway. But of course I realize there are butts on the line so winning now is a big deal to the coaching staff.

I understand the opening schedule is brutal. But I don't think too many reasonably informed Titan fans would be calling for Jake's head if he were to start the season 0-4. We could very well be 0-4 regardless of who starts.

I think you are right about this although I don't agree with the thinking. If the FO feels that Locker will be starting at some point this season anyway then they should just give him the keys right off the bat. I'd rather have a shaky Jake Locker starting the season (in games we're favored to lose anyway) than a shaky Jake Locker starting in November/December when it's all on the line.

BTW, The last time Hasselbeck stayed healthy AND put together a great season was 2007.

Oh well, it's probably not really worth arguing one way or the other anyway. Not to be pessimistic but this is more than likely going to be another 'middle of the pack' type season no matter what.

And FWIW I'm a Hasselbeck fan. I just don't see us going very far with him at the helm and would rather get Locker the experience sooner rather than later.
