Any coach that can do that to Manning is a coach I want coaching my team. He was successful as the Bears D coordinator and helped lead them to the superbowl and now as the chargers D coordinator he has helped coach the best Defensive this year and the Titans need a new face and I think he deserves a chance.

Thought? or feel free to merge

As good a choice as any other. Definitely want a defensive minded coach- just one that isn't against scoring points ala Fisher.

Ron Rivera is another Ditka-Ryan guy who has been coaching for a decent period of time for a lot of good people especially on the defensive side. He worked for Buddy ryan, Jim johnson, Lovie Smith and Dave Wanstedt.

The fact he has had success with more than one team makes the case stronger for him and he has shown the ability to adapt by using the 3-4 at San Diego to match the talent there.

He was a smart linebacker for the bears a Cal guy. I like him especially if he decides to not have a DC and runs the defense himself. We need to upgrade the defense and a guy like Rivera could give us that consistency on defense that Fisher has not delivered.

    Rivera's defenses..

    Bears
    2004-21st
    2005-2nd
    2006-5th

    Chargers

    2008-23rd
    2009-16th
    2010-1st

An average of 10th. Fisher's defenses since moving to Tennessee have an average ranking of 17th. He's not a miracle worker but he does produce once he gets established.

Rivera will need a year to retool our 4-3 or to completely ovehaul the personnel for the 3-4 if he decides to do that. That would be a major issue for MR who has ben drafting for a 4-3.

There are some weak points to consider. Rivera interviewed for head jobs before and didn't get hired and you have to wonder why the Bears did not keep him after the 2006 season. The feeling there was that Lovie smith and the personnel the bears had played a bigger role in why they were good than the DC i guess.

For those who love diversity Rivera is half Mexican and half Puerto Rican.

He should be on our short list.

The most promising thing about those rankings? Both of his down years are his first with each team...

If it is Ron Rivera... do you think we would switch to a 34 defense? That would be interesting but could work.

Jason Jones and Jason Babin would play DE and Tony Brown NT.
McRath OLB and Tulloch/Witherspoon as ILB. Then either draft an OLB or use Jason Ford as an OLB... could be interesting.

I don't think Babin is big enough for a 3-4 end. I'm sure he's been used as an OLB in a 3-4 before and was pretty terrible (or maybe an OLB when he was with Houston?)

He's a pure pass rush end in a 4-3 in my opinion, and he's only thriving here because that's all we ask our ends to do.

Well Babin is a free agent anyway so Rivera doesn't have to re-sign him. :brow:

Regardless I think a 3-4 defense would be nice for the Titans. A healthy Jason Jones could dominate as a DE. Then draft an OLB like Von Miller or Akeem Ayers.

I certainly wouldn't be opposed to going 3-4, but if we don't have the personnel, I don't want to see us changing for the sake of it. I think Buffalo have reverted back to their 4-3 after failing terribly in the 3-4.

It might just take a new coach to come in and spice up our vanilla 4-3 to get things back on track.
