Right now, we have the 700 minute family plan with unlimited texting. We're looking to upgrade to smartphones but it appears they tag $29.99 onto the bill for each phone. That's quite a chunk.

    Anyone know the scoop here?

Also, does Verizon have any wi-fi phones which don't require a data plan?

All Verizon smartphones require a dataplan.
I've got a Droid X, the wife has LG Ally, the wifi is ok, but has trouble using an N router, works fine on G though. Uses a lot of battery.

    I was afraid of that.

I see some data plans which are less expensive for 25 MB, etc. If you are accessing the internet by a wi-fi connection, does it count against you data plan?

Not that I am aware of since you wouldn't be accessing the VZW network. I just tapped into the wifi here at work. The 3G icon disappears when it is on WIFI.

Any way to turn off the 3G via the setting on the phone?

Without disabling the radio for the phone, no. I was able to put it in Airplane Mode and use wifi....

From what I get from the Verizon folks, the data can't be turned off.

of course they're going to tell you that. they don't want you bypassing their network and using a wi-fi connection for skype
