Avvie, your right.... I truly had no idea how radio decides on their playlists. I would love to see a station grow some nuts and play what they want! Oh well, thank god for Ipods!

I still get a kick out of people saying music that doesn't fit their taste is 'terrible' or bad. Every rock/country (country ESPECIALLY) song made pre-1980 is hot garbage sounding to me... but I don't say they're bad. Or bash those that like them. Even though I could go on.

Johnny Cash fans?...oh man. There's an encyclopedia of things I could say to make a valid argument that he's terrible. BUT...he has fans. So he's not bad. He does/did what he was supposed to. Make enjoyable music for someone.

I actually found one here on Maui... a man named Barry Shannon (RIP) saw what FCC deregulation was bringing, so he bought is own license and created a low-wattage listener-supported FM band called Mana'o Radio.

Between the hours of 10am-2pm HST, a DJ named Bill Best mans the board, and he does what original rock radio did: plays a wide variety of artistswith random tracks and lesser-played B-sides. The result is that of course you'll occasionally hear stuff that you'll hate, but you'll also hear forgotten tunes and artists, or maybe your fave song from a particular artist that never makes airplay.

For those with that sort of nostalgia, you can stream it at manaoradio.com.

Be forewarned that listener-supported radio is at the whim of the dj ;) so there are many shows of many types of music from blues to salsa to Hawaiian standards.

I know I'm certainly guilty of calling music terrible... I guess I thought it was understood that I meant that it was terrible for me. It takes all types and genre's of music to make the world go round and if someone didn't like it than it wouldn't be heard.... My frustration is targeted more at the norrow selection of songs that radio plays... Once you hear a song that many times it then becomes terrible! (once again, to me)

And as for Johnny Cash... Please, let's don't even go there... There's a volume of encyclopedia that would explain how he was better than good and influential. We could talk about who's good and who's bad for days and days and no one will win. It doesn't really matter. Like I said, it takes all sorts of music to make it work...

We were doing a fund-raiser a few years ago and the local "oldies" (50s and 60s tunes) station sent a dj for publicity. I asked her why radio stations play the same songs over and over. She admitted to me that her station only plays songs that ranked at the top of the billboard chart. If you call in a request that isn't approved they'll "see if they can get it on" if you know what I mean.

Never thought I'd say this, but I'm sick of most of Lynyrd Skynyrd's big hits, though I can still dig some of the deep cuts. Also, I tried hard to like it, but anything post Ronnie Van Zant is absolute garbage.

Have you noticed the trick that CRR uses?... a pre-recorded caller requests 'some' Lynyrd Skynyrd'.... :irked:

I know a lot of stations get paid big bucks for mentioning the artist name+record label after they play a song. They've sold out. Just like every thing else mainstream.

Glad you said it.. Skynyrd with Johnny VZ is gawd-aweful. Not sure if they'll continue without Billy Powell now but to be honest I would love to see Rick Medlock return to Blackfoot and would have much rather seen Huey Thomason in The Outlaws than some self-parody of Lynyrd Skynyrd before he died..
Honestly, being in Skynyrd must be a curse. Those guys have steadily dropped like flies..
