It will play out like this.

If the Titans REALLY believe in him, they will be making him low ball offers (based on his current production)...5 years at $90-100mil ($18-20mil/yr).

If they aren't sure, there will be no contract negotiations until at least mid-season or perhaps right before the trade deadline.

If he plays well thru the season, they try and sign him long term. If he doesn't, they let him walk, re-sign Tanny and see how far up in the draft we can get with Tanny being the bridge QB or the vet backup.

From Mariota's perspective, they either want him back at the end of the season or they don't. If they do, he gets a lot of money. If they don't, he'll most likely take a 1 yr deal for backup money somewhere like Tanny did this year and look for an opportunity. And we'd look for a way to jump up and get another QB...and start this whole process again.

Much like the mistake the Cards made with Rosen, if we were gonna trade Mariota, we would have needed to do it before the draft.

I think you’re right on. I actually think the best strategy would be to franchise tag Mariota if we don’t reach a deal and wait for 2021 draft for a QB.

Either way we will find out a lot about Jrob’s opinion of Marcus very soon.

Two ways...one as a starter or second as a backup/future starter. I think they can get out of the Carr contract and the speculation is similar there as here. They gave him the weapons to succeed...now they need to see if he can do it in their system. If he can't, they dump him and get a new starter.

TB you already mentioned. Giants if Daniel Jones is a flop. Jags might want to develop someone behind Foles. While Foles had two magical runs, he's regular season stats are underwhelming for the current perception of him. And with DeFillipo getting fired last year...unclear if this is a match made perfectly or a disaster waiting to happen. Stafford isn't getting any younger. Bengals may want a new QB and Cam has had issues staying healthy so they might need someone to back him up and develop There is concern Lamar Jackson's style of offense won't work long term or he won't be able to stay healthy so they could need another QB. Dak you mentioned. Rivers and Brees both need someone to develop behind them.

Lots of possibilities...not a lot of starting spots. But this is the NFL. Someone will under perform and someone will get hurt. Let's just hope those don't apply to our guy!!!

Yet they love Ryan Fitzpatrick, who threw more INTs and the same number of TDs in a vastly superior offense.

Yeah that was my point was that we might be only team offering him a starting role. Can leverage that into a short term/team friendly deal.

Can always cut him if it does not work out. Take a cap hit for a year where we probably suck anyway.

Yeah it would be very easy to sign him to a deal with unlimited guaranteed money. Can make him cuttable in a year or 2.
