    2016 Mariota>>>>>2017/18 Mariota

Go check out the highlights from that year. It's not the supporting cast or coaching carousel. It's him. He played with an edge and trusted his ability. He wasn't always good, but for a second year QB, his shining moments were awesomely encouraging. It wasn't, "he led the team to a 1 point victory over the Jets!" . There was actually impressive QB play and someone to build around. This scared, safe Mariota is a huge buzz kill before the 4th.

The key to this stat is “per target”. Need guys that get open consistently. Marcus doesn’t throw to covered guys, which is a good thing to a point. Not saying it’s all on the WRs, but I definitely think we could use a guy opposite Davis. Losing Delanie hurt Marcus more than anything though imo(aside from injuries)

We could use a guy, a vet...but I don’t think it changes much. It didn’t when we had Matthews. Mariota is who he is. I say we fix the interior Ol and keep the run game going, when we do, we win....

So they are getting wide open on many plays, but they are so covered that it's absolutely impossible to get the ball to them on others? Bull crap. If you only take the easy stuff, you end up with numbers like Tyrod Taylor and Alex Smith. If you combine that with dumb INTs , you end up with numbers like Mariota

He plays well at the end of games. Are receivers consistently getting more separation, or is it because he's forced to actually throw the ball?

Yep...I don’t want to have to “come back” every game to win. Gimme the boring guy that chips away and reads a defense...

So how many times has our recievers actually fought for a ball? Usually the only time they actually catch them is when there is the seperation.

Go back and look at the sacks and see how much seperation there is on those plays. If there’s no seperation and the recievers don’t fight for the ball, only thing left is a sack, or an interception, both of which you will knock Mariota for.

How many contested opportunities do our receivers get? You usually see the ball going to someone wide open, to the other team, or sailing over everyone's head. What is there to fight for? We've seen Davis and Sharpe make one handed catches. Many of Davis' receptions in his rookie season came when he had to post up a defender and make a high point catch. That's a big skill set of his that we are not currently using because of the QB
The more accurate statement is that Alex Smith is a play it safe game manager. Plenty of QBs have blown his 2017 production away with lesser supporting casts and/or coaches.
