    In all fairness, that question has been asked about every OC who has existed in football. Every one of them had to make their first call at some point. You have to start somewhere.

    Some people are making it seem like Smith is some scrub staff member who flew under the radar and got grandfathered in through 4 regimes. If you listen to the coaching staff,players,and what his actual jobs entailed since he’s been here, you’d realize his football IQ is through the roof.

    People talk about the great Sean Mcvay. You know what Mcvay was before he was an OC? A TE coach for 2 yrs. Before that? Assistant TE coach for a year. And before that he was a college quality control/Wr coach for a couple years. Pretty “eh “ resume if you ask me. Josh mcdaniels another guy who was a qb coach and a defensive and personal assistant before becoming a reputable OC. My point is all these good OCs started off somewhere and didn’t become successful overnight. Whether it was Smith,Helfrich,Kubiak, or whoever there’s bound to be a few bumps along the way because that’s just how it is. I get the criticism to a certain degree but let’s see what he can do before we label the hire as a bust.

    What I fear with the offensive minded trend is that our QB will never have consistency with any system unless we have an Offensive Coordinator as Head Coach. Anytime our offense has success another desperate team will snatch them the very next offseason. This team will always be spinning its wheels as far as the offense goes.
