Joe Lombardi could be a dark horse candidate if they wanted to go in a different direction. He's worked under Brees and Payton for 8 years now as a QB coach and has OC experience from his time in Detroit under Jim Caldwell. Stafford played well his time there going for 8400+ yards, 50ish TDs, and 25ish picks over the course of two seasons.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Lombardi grow into one of the hotter OC candidates in a season or two.

As you said, he may be great or he may fail. Where we disagree is the risk. Why would we play it safe?? If there ever was a time to take a chance, now is it. The available OC prospects right now are not that great. We are sticking with Mariota at least for another year like it or not. This QB draft class is incredibly weak anyway. Why not see if we can get a little continuity in the playbook language? Maybe there can be a little magic between them. If not, drafting a QB the following year (much better prospects) with a new OC to go with him makes better sense.

Having to spend a 1st round pick on a QB this soon will be disasterous. Period. If you are a Smith fan that’s great. From a logical processing point of view, the risk at this time, is not worth it. Better to hire an experienced hand now and get Smith more integrated in the offense for the next OC opening we have. Given our track record, that’s only a season anyway...

I don’t disagree with your viewpoint. It’s valid. Im not a fan of Smith. I know probably as much about him as you. I’m just a believer in taking risks. There is no guarantee it would work. We’ve had a bad track record of stale, play-it-safe hires in the past. Vrabel is a welcome change and I think he and JRob would roll the dice with Artie. He might fail. He could also be our Andy Reid, Sean McVay, or Arians, all of whom were TE coaches before stellar OCs.

Let’s hope that’s the case if we promote him and that he’s not the Gomer Pyle of OCs.

If we bring in or promote a first time play caller I feel we should bring in one other as a offensive consultant

Yea I like this prospective. Go all in and roll the dice. Why play it safe? For another 9-7 season and bottom half draft pick?! Mariota is on the last year of his rookie deal and we have absolutely nothing to lose. Maybe we get lucky and Arthur and a healthy Mariota take us to the next level. If not, and they both crash and burn, oh well we are starting from scratch next year. Truth is we might be starting from scratch next year anyway, regardless of who the OC is, if Mariota can’t stay healthy or continues to regress.

Next Year is a make or break season, with a higher likelihood of it breaking. Might as well get creative and swing for the fences if there aren’t drastically better options.
