Well, he actually had a very terrible average for holding the ball.

Yes, Mariota threw some of the best passes of his career....
the fact that you just named all of them (for his career) in one sentence pretty much sums that up....

If you had said that was written today, I would believe it. Those are exactly the faults he has right now, with what seems 0 improvement from his college days.

Yep those are his weaknesses for sure. But that’s my exact point. Re read the first line of that entire post. That’s the type of offense we need to implement.

Look at Tom Brady, he has dudes wide open all the time. Whether it’s his RB in the flat, or guys finding soft spots in coverage. I’ve talked about this before here but Mariota doesn’t “throw guys open” like Rodgers does. But neither does Brady. He reads the defense pre snap and knows where his mismatch is. Simple as that. He beats you mentally by being prepared pre snap. Rodgers beats you by making incredible throws. 2 totally different styles but both are successful.

That whole “college system doesn’t work in the NFL” crap is not true at all. Kansas City and the Rams did countless RPO’s this weekend.

Also, to this point, what’s the best way to negate a blitz? Quick, short throws.

I don't think the argument is that concepts from a college system won't work. It's that evaluating a QB from a college spread system is difficult because they aren't required to do things that they will in the NFL.

We can't just assume that because Mariota put up big numbers in college, that there is a way to make that translate to the NFL. If that was the case, every Urban Meyer , Steve Spurrier, Mike Leach , and Chip Kelly QB would be successful, instead of none. The only exception is Alex Smith, who shows many limitations as well.
