Most fans here would have been calling for McNair's to be replaced too.

Remember the first game of the 1999 season people wanting Neil O'Donnell to start?

All good coaches cater to their QB's strengths.

(Not going to talk about McNair, NFL has changed significantly since his time, and our memories are altered by how good he did after his first 4 years.)

    Thoughts on Mariota:
I started the season thinking Mariota was going to have an INCREDIBLE year. I thought his poor perfomance last was due to a poor running game in an offensive system dependent on a good run game, and coaches refusal to try something different when it was not working.

I was a HUGE Mariota fan boy.
But I have been disapointed this year, due to too high expectations.

Mariota has been more inconsistent, with even WORSE bad games, and conversely even better good games.

    Let's look at some numbers.
(We need numbers to minimize perception bias.)

    I like ESPN Total QBR.
Why? Because Mariota contributes a LOT with his legs, any statistical analysis of Mariota that does not incorporate rushing, is DEEPLY flawed.
(Example: In the Dallas game, Mariota rushed for FIVE first downs. That is huge.)
Mariota's year end ranking in QBR

    2015: #26
    2016: #13
    2017: #13

    2018 so far: #14

So, recapping, he did poorly as a rookie, like almost all rookies.
Since then he has been slightly above average.

Since it is so hard to find a good QB, teams will keep a slightly above average QB. Expect a long term contract over the off season.

    Some historical perspective:
    Jim Plunkett
    He won the 1970 Heisman.
He was a journeyman QB for NINE years, 1971-1979, playing mediocre ball for those 9 years.
In his 10th year he transformed, and became really good, (who knows how), and led his team to Super Bowl victory, becoming Super Bowl MVP.

    What's my point?
Lot's of QBs in NFL history have started slow, then later on, became great.
(Even more started slow, got worse and left the league.)

It's still too early to judge Mariota.

He is playing above average, over all, for 3 years running. That's good for a young QB, and should give us hope. (OK, only slightly above average, but it's still above average.)

His really bad games this year are largely related to not being able to feel his fingers...that and getting sacked 11x in one game...since being healthy he has looked very good. He needs to keep it up, but his inconsistency is pretty easily explained this year.

He would have to have a bad end to the season for the Titans not to sign him.

Sometimes you have to wonder what folks watch on Sundays. The fact that Mariota has better numbers than those two this early in his career despite being held back really is astounding.

This year the Titans are 31st in passing attempts, 5th in rushing attempts.

In 2017 they were 28th in passing attempts, 14th in rushing attempts.

In 2016 they were 28th in passing attempts, 4th in rushing attempts.

His rookie season was more of the same, but I won't even count that year with a disgustingly bad roster.

The reason MM8 has had as many comeback victories as he has and why the 4th quarter is when his best comes out is because that's when the coaching staff has no other choice but to have him dish the ball out. I've liked what I've seen from LaFleur these last two games, so I still have hope that he'll continue to expand the playbook. It's been frustrating watching mini Mularkey ball but without the jumbo sets for most of this season.

I'm seeing a lot of revisionist history in this thread. I'm 23 years old, so I was a kid thru McNair's 20's.. so I can't speak on how accurate the video I'm about to post is. I'd like to see some input from all of you.

Watch from 22 minute mark up to like the 28th minute.

According to Jim Wyatt and Mike Keith, Titans fans booed Steve in 1999 during a game against the Bengals. 99' was his 5th season. The majority of fans wanted him gone. A lot of the "soft" labels that Marcus is dealing with right now were also pinned on to McNair early in his career.

I thought this clip was perfect for this thread. Just to keep things in perspective when comparing them during their first years in the league.... thoughts?

Everyone is all talking about how the game is so much different but fail to realize we've only graduated to a modern playbook this year.

the word 'most' ... probably should not be used... 'some' would be more accurate

McMVP was boo'd... on more than one occasion. Deserved it ... these guys can have bad games

finished watching the timeframe you suggested... Keith full of :bs: exactly zero Titan fans thought McMVP never got hurt... of course he did. Fishface would limit his practice and TC participation to minimize his snap counts .... NOBODY else got those concessions from fishface. I would only guess Keith deals with fans that are not GoTitans members. Mongoloids all
