Here's a great quote from David Foster Wallace (who also ultimately killed himself) about depression/suicide:

Basically, you're never gonna understand if you haven't been at that point. Feeling like **** all the time can't be easy and I'm sure is completely exhausting. Whether it's mentally feeling like **** or physical. It's not as simple as "taking the easy way out" and it doesn't necessarily mean you are selfish and don't care about your loved ones you are leaving behind.

It's tough for certain people to wrap their heads around if they've never been truly depressed. My dad was one of those folks for as long as I can remember. "People who commit suicide are selfish, cowards, etc."...... then his brother killed himself and he got a new perspective on it.

It’s ok to admit you don’t understand something.

    Exactly.

I've been saying this for a while.

Battling depression can take a long time and you only have to hit one extreme low for it to become suicide. Sometimes it's so random, everyone is shocked.

"Oh well I went through some hard times and I came out just fine."

An exact example of what's wrong with the mentality and why a lot of people who need help, dont seek it until they are damaged. Families arent always supportive and they cannot always understand. Friends dont relate. You can feel you are in a fight where you feel alone, regardless of who's around you.

In many of these instances, the person genuinely feels like they are alone or feel like they their loved ones are better off without them. Not just think, but feel and that is their reality.

Its also a medical problem. When your body is lacking dopamine and seratonin, it doesn't care how much money you have, how successful you are, or what you have been through.

Bourdain (Food), Robin Wiliams (actor), Chester Bennington (musician), Chris Benoit (wrestler),...... I can make a pretty good list here. Eventually the pattern emerges that it gets to people regardless of their circumstances.

I get it. Some people just cannot relate to those feelings. That's fine but some of you are really out of touch with what depression is all about.

    "I get sad too"

    It is not that simple.

    Sorry bud, this isnt true.

I get what youre saying. We all have the ability to control or sway our emotions. When you lose control of that, in one way or the other, then that's when mental illness takes a turn that's hard for people to relate to and it's hard to treat.

A lot of what I posted above was condensed because I am long winded.

Doctors (physicians, not psychologist) tell everyone their problem is depression or anxiety. Even some mental health institutions over diagnose it now. Real depression is serious though.

Take one of the saddest moments you can remember. Now think of the reason why you were sad. Imagine feeling that sadness randomly and sometimes having no clue why you feel that way.

Theres a reason why all the adds say the same thing. "You are not alone"

Yeah, I hate it when people talk about it being cowardly or what not. The vast majority of people who kill themselves are not thinking clearly, whether it is long term mental health issues, or even just a distraught moment they over react to. It is easy for people to talk about it, but unless a person has ever been at that point (which I have not), I can't possibly see how people could understand it.

Not to mention it simply doesnt make since to use "cowardly" with someone like Bourdain. The guy was living a good life, so I can't possibly see what he was scared of to do this. Maybe that can be applied to someone with money problems, legal problems, etc etc (though even then I think typically there is something deeper going on), but Bourdain had it made, so I dont know how cowardice would factor in.

You are talking about different things. Being sad is not depression. Everyone is sad at times, that doesnt mean we are all suffering from depression. And you cannot control how you feel. Sure, you can do things to better your life that can help you feel better, but there are things we all have some sort of feelings about that we dont control.
