He's an above average player. I am sold on that.

Bunch of ungrateful d heads in here...Go Hop on a bandwagon squad if you want Brady or Rodgers. Ya don’t look like a genius calling out the obvious bad decisions last year...

    There is a spectrum.

Bad, below average, average, above average, good, very good, great, and elite.

Derrick Morgan is in the in the middle of the bell curve. Good run stopper. Average pass rusher. Add those two up and you get above average.

Above average is good with me. Considering he has alot to achieve, the guy is only like 23 years of age.... I neccesarily dont think the coaching was a huge problem why he sucked this year, I think as a team we regressed, now you either blame the players for it or the coaches schemes in general. Football is a team sport, a QB cant magically make everyone better if the players arent putting in the effort to execute.

You have to apply the Mularkey affect to Mariota. Same with Fisher and Goff, or Trubisky and Fox. Certain types of coaches will ruin a QB...

If there is any consolation, at least Mariota was kept upright while Mularkey was around. Goff is still trying to get over the beating he took in those games under Fisher.

OK, this will be long, but this is how I see these...
#1 Did our rookie TE run the right route? Mariota threw the pass like Smith would break out, not in. Strange combo also that Murray stalls coming out of the backfield...leaving his guy to drop back and blanket Smith....essentially setting the defense up to succeed. Mariota's throw makes me think Smith ran the wrong route.

#2 Mariota over threw Walker. Was under some pressure so his mechanics and footwork were not in sync. Missed throw on Mariota.

#3 50/50 trust throw to Matthews. Matthews needs to catch the ball or at worst stop it from being picked. Poor effort by Matthews. If he high points the ball, it's a nice gain! Mariota will learn to put a little more zip on that throw to make it an easier catch...but Matthews needs to make a better effort and that should never be picked.

#4 This is a great play by the LB, but it should never have happened. Murray again stalls coming out of the backfield...waiting for the LB to come to him. But since Murray isn't going anywhere, it allows the LB to watch Mariota...leap up and and make a great catch. Murray has to attack his man low to keep his hands down since it's a short throw. Great play by the LB, poor play by Murray.

#5 Mariota over throws Matthews because Matthews can't fight thru the DB who is arm fighting with him...slowing him down. Matthews was getting free last year. Here, he's not getting to where he needs to be.

#6 This is a weird play design or Decker ran the wrong route. No one designs a route combo where you run a curl inside a slant because of what happened on this play. Decker runs a little curl inside of Davis' slant. Since Decker is stopped, his defender reads the QB and is now in the passing lane for the slant. Decker should have run a speed out as this is a staple route combo run by all teams (to clear that defender).

#7 Simply bad mechanics/footwork resulting in Mariota airmailing a pass over the wide open wr and hitting the S. Good read, bad throw.

#8 Poor route by Davis. He runs what looks like a hitch because he comes to a stop. The defender then reads the QB and breaks inside before Davis does. Davis needs to run the correct route and if he's late out of his break, he needs to come back to the ball to prevent an INT. This is the NFL, not HS.

#9 A bit unlucky on this one and a little gamble. Down by 20, Mariota throws a 50/50 ball to a covered wr. It gets deflected up and a S picks it. mariota had a wide open wr underneath who would have got the first down on 2nd and 4, but Mariota took a shot at a bigger gain since we were down so much and it dodn't work out. Not a bad decision or throw, but not the safest choice or throw he could have made.

#10 Bad throw as he threw it behind Walker on a Slant.

#11 Bad throw by Mariota as it was short and behind Douglas.

#12 On the WR who fell down.

#13 On Matthews who ran the wrong route. This should have been a TD!!!

#14 First bad READ (as opposed to bad throw) by Mariota as he didn't see the underneath LB drop.

#15 This was a bad READ and a bad THROW!

#16 Another INT caused by Davis who didn't run his route correctly. If you're the clearing wr, you have to run hard the whole route. He didn't which allowed his DB to be in a position to break on the ball. Great break by Peters but Davis needs to understand NFL db's understand the route combo's too and if you don't force them out of position, they will guess pretty accurately where the ball is going and get the INT.

*Keep in mind pick 16 is in the playoff where he had 4 TD's and 1 pick in 2 games and that pick wasn't on him.

So let's see...here's how this breaks down.

7 picks are on Mariota. Of these, 2 had bad reads and 6 were inaccurate.

7 INT's are on the WR's and TE's. This includes a wr falling down, Decker/Davis/Smith running poor or incorrect routes. It also includes a 50/50 ball Matthews should have caught or at least knocked down.

1 pick can be partially blamed on Murray not attacking the LB he's supposed to be blocking...allowing him to make a great play.

1 play was Mariota throwing to a covered wr who couldn't catch it and it got tipped up. I separate this out because some will blame Mariota for not taking the easy and safe throw while others may blame the wr for not making the catch.

And for those keeping score, Mariota had 22 TD's and 16 INT's on the year (regular season and playoffs) since this examination of his interceptions includes a playoff interception.

Now who's doing the video of the dropped TD's this season?

Man Gut, usually I'm all in on your analysis, but this one leaves me guessing.

In your breakdown lets just assume Mariota is blindfolded, is that what you're trying to get us to think? He has to see these throes he's making, right?

Blaming Davis on a ball he had no chance of catching because late and behind being tipped up is ridiculous.

Blaming Matthews on a ball that was overthrown and couldn't race to the ball to break up the safety catching it is preposterous.

Saying Peters made a great play without even getting out of his backpedal and squatting on the underneath route is oblivious.

What I see when watching this video is Mariota not taking what the defense is giving and forcing balls into coverage. His decision making and mechanics need to improve and he no longer gets the benefit of the doubt as his scapegoats Mularkey/Robiskie are gone.

It's all on Mariota now. LaFleurGod

Ill put the int that he threw to Mathews on him as he didn't hold the safety long enough to create a passing lane but the second int he threw to Davis was not on him. Mariota managed to free up the middle of the field. You hope to see your 5th overall pick make contested catches in one on one situations.
