As a math geek, it bothers me to see so many people reference passing rating. It's a BAD stat to use to evaluate QB's.

It does not take into account fumbles.
(Mariota lost one fumble in 2017, when Henry ran into him.)

It does not take into account running.
(Mariota is a very good runner.)

It does not discount stats earned in garbage time.
Many QB's get lots of passer rating boosting from garbage time completions.

Total QBR does take into account all of that, and what was Mariota's QBR in 2017?

54.9. good enough for 13th in the league.

Yes, his passing numbers were much worse in 2017, compared to 2016, but when one factors in his superior clutch play in 2017, (remember those late game, game losing turnovers he had in 2016?), his fewer fumbles, his many 3rd down scrambles for first downs, he was not so bad in 2017, and his slightly above average 54.9 QBR reflects this. (FYI, QBR is designed to have 50.0 as average.)

And yes, I expect/hope he will do much better in 2018 with a system designed to take advantage of his special skill set.

But please stop focusing only on his passing numbers decline in 2017.
Broaden your analysis to include the things he improved upon, that passing rating does not even look at.
(Fumbles, play in 4th quarters in close games, scrambling for first downs, etc.)

I think if you really take it all into account, you will find he did decline in 2017, but only by a little.
    (His 2016 QBR was 59.1)

I think hes ranked in the 16-20. One of the most important things is being available to play. Half those QBs mentioned all stay healthy and play a full season. Im not sure if Mariota has even stayed healthy for a complete year?
I do like his potential as he has shown signs of greatness, but he worries me too. All running qbs usually make bone head plays and hes no different. I think having a new system to fit his strengths can help alot but not make him flawless.
I also rarely see him on the sideline always looking at the tablets and figuring out the defenses etc. I watch Brady,Brees and they live on those tablets on the sidelines. I dont know if thats a knock on Mariota or coaching or what but I would love to see my QB living on that tablet after each turnover or lost possesion of the football so he can figure what to do differently next time around.

Only 10 percent said he was in bottom half. 90 top half. I'd put him around 7 to 9 but have no doubt he will rise now that we won't be calling plays out of 1972

Contrary to popular belief, there's actually a lot of good QBs in the league. Here's a list of QBs definitely better than Mariota as of now:

    1.) Rodgers
    2.) Brady
    3.) Brees
    4.) Luck
    5.) Wilson
    6.) Big Ben
    7.) Wentz
    8.) Jimmy G
    9.) Ryan
    10.) Stafford
    11.) Cousins
    12.) Rivers
    13.) Carr
    14.) Maybe Cam

Not all of these guys are naturally better than Mariota. Most have a lot more experience, and the young guys on that list (Wentz, Jimmy G) have had exceptional coaching from the best offensive minds.

I would put Mariota right beneath that so around 14 or 15. Guys like Mariota, Goff, Deshaun, Winston, Dak are all interchangeable right now. However, I put Mariota above all these guys because all the others have all played under a good offensive coach (Goff, Deshaun, Winston) or have had great help around them (Dak).

This is going to be a key year for Mariota. He has a good OC and will have a healthy offseason. I expect him to be a top 8-10 QB this year.

Jimmy threw 7 TDs and 5 INTS in the what, 5-6 games he's played... Putting him on the list with the rest of those guys is ridiculous.

Wentz was having a hell of a year before being injured but I think he could easily come back down to earth also.

    Luck is overrated.

The rest, I can somewhat agree with... Most of them are established QBs that have been around for a while and are considered top tier.
