There was still a lot of buzz about him in spite of this. It's not like they could ignore that major red flag. Who knows, if the league hasn't gone crazy with hiring QB Whisperers as HCs after McVay's success, he may have already been gone.

a coach with a defensive background is less likely to be married to an offensive scheme that is failing.

also, this becomes a very attractive OC position as the new OC will almost surely hve free reign.

in addition to have a young franchise QB and LT

Since I've had a few hours to digest it and get off the Josh McDaniels Train, I like the hire.

I don't mind hiring a defensive coach. People seem to think just because he cut his chops as a defensive player and coach he doesn't know how to coach offense. I think that is ridiculous. If anything, as a defensive coordinator, he knows how offenses would attack a defense and he knows what a problematic offense looks like.

I like that we hired a guy who was familiar with this offense as it was in 2016 and 2017. He had to break down two years' worth of film to game plan for divisional matchups each year. He knows the strengths and weaknesses of this team offensively.

As @Riverman and a few others have pointed out, with a defensive coach being the head guy, the OC will be the play caller and that is an attractive promotion for talented, aspiring OCs.

I like that he will be a CEO-type and not a micromanager on game day. I'm not a fan of the HC/playcaller on Sundays. I prefer guys to delegate that responsibility to their assistants and focus on managing the game at a macro level.

We'll see what the staff looks like as it rounds out, but as far as this one hire, I can get behind it.
